This is a heavenly location, a beautiful and spiritual refuge that rises up on Mount Ktenias, just 11 kilometers from Tripoli. It is a male stavropegic monastery, dedicated to St. Nicholas. Very fitting since the secret holy water that springs from its Holy Step gains in volume and gushes plentifully from the many cool springs. The legendary Abbot Simeon, hero of the revolution, saw that this “garden of God” took an active part in the uprising of 1821. The monastery’s cathedral actually houses the lodge of the Martyr Demetrios and part of the relics of the martyr Paul. They are the patron saints of Tripoli who suffered shortly before the revolution, setting the example of the sacrifice that was needed. The magnificent outer enclosure has been formed over the years by the laborious monks. The original monastery was established in the 11th century AD and flourished during the 14th century. Many times it suffered the fury of conquerors of the Peloponnese, but was never destroyed. It has a rich archive and a host of treasures, as well as a significant library.
