The place has always been sacred as it previously hosted a temple of Artemis Ymnia. Many architectural and decorative features have been assimilated in the building of this temple. Tuff stone, tiles and processed stones have been combined with newer materials to give a spiritual work of art of distinctive force and value. The church must have been erected in the 11th ad. It belongs to the Basilica model with a dome arch, a rare type found in few churches. It is cross-roofed and its dome has been painted with icons. It must have been submitted to many renovations without ever spoiling its original style and order. In the epistyle of the door there is inscription which refers to one of the renovation and bears a relief presentation of angels in the center.
